Why matthew died in downton abbey

Congratulations Dan Stevens, you ruined everything. I will never get over your death on Downton Abbey. Though I knew Dan Stevens had more or less chosen his own fate and wanted to move on. Dan Stevens ruled in The Guest, by the way. I will never forgive Dan Stevens for leaving Downton Abbey and causing me the hurt of Matthew's death.

Excuse me while I sob, again, for the 50th time. Fans flooded social media with complaints about his on-screen death, splitting the blame between Dan and the showrunners.

Dan gave a lengthy interview to the Telegraph ahead of his exit, and it basically sums up to him wanting to explore other projects. From a personal point of view, I wanted a chance to do other things.

And I think a moment like this is quite unique and presents those opportunities more than ever before. He and his wife, Susie, were also expecting their second child together they now have three: Willow, 9, Aubrey, 7, and Eden, 3.

So he had plenty going on in his personal life, as well. Country Life. Design Ideas. Loyal viewers of the show had lots of reasons to get invested in the character. And just like the car accident that claimed the Downton heir, there also seemed little anyone could do to change the fate of Dan Stevens on the series. When the episode involving the death of Matthew Crawley first aired on Christmas Day in the United Kingdom, there was an outpouring from some horror-stricken viewers.

Many claimed their happy holiday had been ruined by such a terrible tragedy, especially after the character had just welcomed his child with Lady Mary. Viewers in America were similarly stunned only a few weeks later on PBS. Behind the scenes the show had been pulling out all the stops to try to find another way.

Executive producer Gareth Neame felt the harsh exit was the best choice for the character given the circumstances. We will have to mourn Matthew on our own, in our own ways.
